Way to RHCE
RHCE,that is,RedHat Certified Engineer,which is a computer certification aiming at training experts of linux operating system.As the release of RedHat Enterprice Edition,this operating system is becoming the best choice of computer server.Meanwhile,RHCE is always among the top 10 computer certifications which are most valuable and hottest.Unlike MCSE or other computer ceritification,RHCE is based on the ability of practicing and the cost of time of the exam is 6 hours long.That makes RHCE among the certifications most hard to get.Here,I will address the subject how to prepare the exam.
Let’s start with the introduction of the Components of
of the exam.
For RHCE exams given on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 and higher, the exam is organized as follows:
• Troubleshooting and System Maintenance — 2.5 hours
• Installation and Configuration — 3.0 hours
In order to earn RHCE, one must successfully complete all the RHCT-level Troubleshooting and System Maintenance requirements, and successfully complete enough additional RHCE items to earn a score of 80 or higher overall on the section.
In addition, one must score 70 or higher on the RHCT items of Installation and Configuration, and 70 or higher on the RHCE components of that section. We describe the skills associated with RHCT and RHCE below.
Candidates should possess the following skills, as they may be necessary in order to fulfill requirements of the RHCT and RHCE exams:
use standard command line tools (e.g., ls, cp, mv, rm, tail, cat, etc.) to create, remove, view, and investigate files and directories
use grep, sed, and awk to process text streams and files
use a terminal-based text editor, such as vi/vim, to modify text files
use input/output redirection
understand basic principles of TCP/IP networking, including IP addresses, netmasks, and gateways
use su to switch user accounts
use passwd to set passwords
use tar, gzip, and bzip2v
configure an email client on Red Hat Enterprise Linux
use mozilla and/or links to access HTTP/HTTPS URLs
use lftp to access FTP URLs
Installation and Configuration
RHCTs must be able to:
perform network OS installation
implement a custom partitioning scheme
configure printing
configure the scheduling of tasks using cron and at
attach system to a network directory service, such as NIS or LDAP
configure autofs
add and manage users, groups, and quotas
configure filesystem permissions for collaboration
install and update RPMs
properly update the kernel RPM
modify the system bootloader
implement software RAID at install-time and run-time
use /proc/sys and sysctl to modify and set kernel run-time parameters
RHCE skills
Troubleshooting and System Maintenance
RHCEs must demonstrate the RHCT skills listed above, and should be able to:
use the rescue environment provided by first installation CD
diagnose and correct bootloader failures arising from bootloader, module, and filesystem errors
diagnose and correct problems with network services (see Installation and Configuration below for a list of these services)
add, remove, and resize logical volumes
Installation and Configuration
RHCEs must demonstrate the RHCT-level skills listed above, and they must be capable of configuring the following network services:
HTTP/HTTPS
SMB
NFS
FTP
Web proxy
SMTP
IMAP, IMAPS, and POP3
SSH
DNS
For each of these services, RHCEs must be able to:
install the packages needed to provide the service
configure the service to start when the system is booted
configure the service for basic operation
Configure host-based and user-based security for the service
RHCEs must also be able to:
configure hands-free installation using Kickstart
implement logical volumes at install-time
use PAM to implement user-level restrictions

Do you know well about the skills above?Well,if your answer is ‘no’,I recommend you to download the documents from official web site.These documents are all in English and about hundreds of pages each document.If you
are not a native English speaker ,make sure your level of English is good enough to read and understand these documents.You should remember that the exam is in English,too.
If your working platform is not RedHat,to get RHCE will be painful experience because as I have mentioned RHCE is totally a test of your pratical skills even without questions of choices.So now you should install RedHat on you computer as soon as possible.However,that is not enough.A large part of the exam requires the networking environment.Here is a solution.Download the VMWARE software from officical vmware web site and install it.Please Note the the free edition is for trial,you have to pay for it to get the license.The details about how to install vmware,you can alse refer to the docs of the official web site.Then after the installation of the software,you can intall two or more copies of RedHat operating system on the virtual machine vmware provides.Maybe my describition is too brief for you.Don’t worry.Please always keep in your mind that the official web site is you friend.
There is an old saying” Practice makes perfect”.That is definitely true for the RHCE exam.In fact,the tasks you face during the exam are not so tough,the problem is that you have to accomplish them in short time.You can refer to the varieties of books about RHCE to get some tips of the exam.But there is no shortcut to the certification,it is necessary that you spend at least two hours every day on RedHat operating system.You should be familiar with the configuration files under /etc directory.You should know how to write an fstab file by yourself,etc.You should be good at troubleshooting by browsing logs.
Now I will give you some tips about the exam.First, time is an important issue of RHCE exam.Please use text mode to solve problems,that will save you much time.At dead time,that is ,during the period of installation,You can begin to think and do something about the following questions.Second,’man’ is very useful.In conclusion,I remind you that don’t be too hurry.You may fall into the traps if you misunderstand the questions.Take it easy and Good Luck.
