需不需要编辑内核？

Intel(R) 536EP V.92 Modem
我装了个modem的驱动是这样的，modem的说明是这样

“6 steps to install
1. login as ROOT
作为root登陆
2. extract the archive into a directory with "tar -zxvf <archivename>.tgz"
用那个命令解压缩
3. cd into the directory it created.
进入目录
make clean
make 536ep
make install
用这仨命令安装
但是你必须注意：
8. Compile issues
a. this driver will now compile with the this path:
/lib/modules/<kernel version>/build/include
驱动编译要用到这个目录
the 2.4.4+ kernels says to copy the /boot/vmlinuz.version.h
over to the kernel build path. I have the makefile do this
if this file exists. You must install the kernel source
code anyways. It should be on your distribution's CD.
必须用你的源Cd安装内核代码包，比如rh就是kernel-source这个包。”



而我只运行了这三个命令！说明接下来的我就无法完成了，因为我不懂，结果是这样

但拨号时拨到快要上时就掉了，显示“没有载波”

多次设置kppp后还是一样

平时我是在kde下拨的，在字符下是拨给你们看看能不能看出什么问题？请问我需要编辑内核这些吗？
