install Freetype2 ????

When I install freetype2,I meet the problem:
linux:/home/wanglin/Documents/freetype-2.1.9 # ./configure --prefix=/usr
GNU make (>= 3.79.1) or makepp (>= 1.19) is required to build FreeType2.
Please try
  `GNUMAKE=<GNU make command name> ./configure'.
or >&2
  `GNUMAKE="makepp --norc-substitution" ./configure'.
how to deal with it ? thank you!

In suse9.1 make-3.80-148 is available
may be you haven't install 'make' or(and) 'makepp'
Do you really need 2.1.9
current version is freetype2-2.1.7-53
can easily install by using yast2
BTW I don't think 'configure' need a 'root ' authority
