mysql创建root口令疑问?

我的mysql按照步骤说明已经安装成功.但是在设置root密码时出现了以下问题,希望高手能够协助解决.谢谢

# /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqladmin -u root -p password 123456
Enter password:
/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (111)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/tmp/mysql.sock' exists!

注:我通过ps -ef|grep mysql已经看到mysql在running,另/tmp.mysql.sock是什么文件,有什么关联.怎么来解决呢.十分感谢高手们.
