UBUNTU PROBLEMS

Hi Guys, I am brand new to linux. sorry that I can't type chinese at the moment as I still can't have fcitx installed.

my problem is can't have softwares installed. I think what I need is just a gcc.rpm  which I downloaded and installed. and I can find gcc4 in file /usr/bin.  but it still says "no gcc, no cc" when I try to install softwares.

I can't figure it out. Is it the version problem? or whatever else?

another problem, I can't access gmail in Linux, is there any network setup I need to adjust?

If you are using ubuntu linux,you can install gcc*.deb by using "sudo apt-get install gcc".
Use your web browser to access Gmail.If you want to use POP,you should configure this in gmail's web.

You are a ubuntu user, aren't you?
Ubuntu has its own package management system which is called apt.
You'd better visit http://www.ubuntu.org.cn to have more infomation.
It would be definitely more efficient than browsing the countless posts here.
You know, the searching engine here is completely a headache.

u don't need gcc or *.rpm for installing most softwares such as fcitx

It was the web browser that I couldn't use to access gmail, I haven't try any other email clients yet. I have to adjust my network setup anyway, coz I can't browse a lost web sites, like email.google.com  it can't even display it. just says time out.

you can use Firefox as browser instead of konqueror.
GMail won't be a problem.
