Progress report on this build. Using mesa and Xgl ebuilds dated 20060418, I can still run this bad boy with all the various effects on. However, I completely forgot to pull and build the latest compiz version available. Amazingly I am still running on 20060322-r2 right now. However, the most pleasing thing right now is being able to watch Initial D at 100% zoom w/o any noticeable framerate hit (video resolution is at 640x360). Before the video framerate wouldn't be good enough to properly view the animation at full speed. Now I can and it's wonderful. I do not know how this'll affect 640x480 video but I'll test this at a later time. For now I am happy that the continuing updates on the Intel drivers that the performance of it continues to improve on it.
For those wondering and wishing to try it out... here are the juicy details:
Intel 855GM
512MB RAM -- 32MB reserved for video
Pentium-M 1.7GHz
gentoo-sources-2.6.15-gentoo-r1
mesa 6.5.1 p20060418
Xgl p20060418
compiz 0.0.7 p20060322-r2
Xorg 7.0 w/ xorg-server 1.0.99.901-r1 and xf86-video-i810 1.6.0
x11-drm-20051223
This ought to be enough info... although I question if x11-drm can be skipped in order to determine if the stable release is enough to get everything going. I didn't try glxgears or anything else. I focus on usability as well as media playback since this laptop cannot do much. But amazingly this thing will kick Windows Vista any day of the week with its ability to do fancy effects on this kind of hardware.
