Skype - Gizmo Project - Wengophone - Amsn - Gaim 2.0.0cvs
During the last weeks instant messenger with VoIP and video or VoIP clients with IM functions under Linux got pretty mature.
Skype 1.2.0.18: nothing special about it. It does what it always did. But linux support is still behind windows support :-(
Gizmo 1.0.0.15: It's finally usable! Many feature are now also implemented in the linux client. Unfortunately you cannot yet change the input and output device. I hope it will come soon.
Wengophone v0.958b-ALPHA: The most amazing one I've seen so far. It's also SIP based as Gizmo but does also feature video! After having setup my webcam thanks to easyspca I was dying to try a client that supports video. Under the Video settings is a button "Webcam Preview", and after clicking on it I saw the image. I was surprised! Now I wanted to see if the cam also does work in action. So I called the test number 334. As a matter of fact, I could see the image. Chapeau!! This application is just terrific!
Amsn cvs: This msn clone does also support video and some msn gimmicks. The UI doesn't look nice. The video function does work but uses a lot of cpu ressources.
Gaim 2.0.0cvs : Check this thread for the cvs versions. Be aware it's cvs. Use it at your own risk! For me under dapper the version didn't work because of SSL problems. And the needed file to install conflicts with newer files on dapper. But the version from akurashy works fine. Looks very nice and supports also some msn gimmicks. And it seems that it's now possible to send files via ICQ, but I've not yet tried it.
Bottom line, these applications show me that linux isn't far behind windows when it goes about voip, video & IM clients.
