Actually, the most important thing is "iptables", which means NAT(Network Address Translation). It will translate your internal IP to that static IP so you can go Internet(WWW,FTP, ICQ..).
"Squid" -- Proxy service is another alternative or addon. It can sit on the machine with static IP, and listen for the web access request from internal and retrieve and return the content to internal host. So with "Squid", you can surf Internet (and use some applications that make use of HTTP protocol) even if you don't have NAT.
DHCP is just for you to manage a bunch of IP addresses. You can also choose not to use it, then you must manually make sure not IP conflict (no two host have same IP).
DHCP is very good for mobile users, which means they can plug to different network with no manual change of settings. |
