512 内存不能用来干正事，但是编译系统定制系统玩一下还是可以的。
你的问题其实是 intel 显卡驱动的问题。intel 显卡驱动在这些年变动了非常多，而 linux 下能够表现一致稳定的只有 nvidia 显卡， intel 与 ati 都或多或少会出问题。事实上 nv 跟 ati 因为有闭源驱动，表现略好不容易出问题， intel 只有开源驱动，对于新手来说出了问题基本只有去哭。
830M 显卡的那个机器我也有过一台，装最新的 ubuntu 跟 SUSE 都不行，后来还是装 arch 搞定，你可以试一下。
其实呢，内存只是影响性能，不会影响你无法使用，如果初学 linux 没经验，最好的选择就是用 nvidia 显卡。
btw bro, i don't think that with 512M or even less we couldn't do much. i'm using one like this. of course no window things are being installed, but for everything under the so-called destkop, we could always find an option which is under command line. have you ever tried Screen? it's much better than many things else in terms of window management. and emacs? of course if you're used to eclipse, it's hard to go along with emacs ;)
actually i'm using this one as the data center: it's a bit slow, but i believe it's much more stable than many other computers at my home, which were made by myself. it's from HP. it's old. but the ventilation inside is quite good, so in it we're not going to have things like over-heating. and many of my big disks are attached to it right now.
