eth0 does not exist!

gentoo-2.6.17-r8

安装成功reboot后，/etc/init.d/net.eth0 restart

display:

* network interface eth0 does not exist
* Please verify hardware or kernel module(dirver)

Tell me how to next. thanks a ton!

modprobe 8139too!!!!
