Ever seen a request for an ebuild or even an already made ebuild in Bugzilla, assigned to maintainer-wanted/needed? Some of them already started smelling because they have been rotting for years now? And you wonder why no one does anything about that? Then Project Sunrise may be a solution for you.
Few Gentoo developers will take packages to the tree they are not really interested in, so users download the ready made ebuild and put it into their local overlay which may grow overtime. For some time now there exists a project which will extend the official tree to a user handled one. It is easy to use, and it is easy to participate. First, you need layman, a tool to manage overlays provided in many different ways. To get Sunrise just do
emerge layman
echo "source /usr/portage/local/layman/make.conf" >> /etc/make.conf
layman -f -a sunrise
Afterwards you can use the packages by simply unmasking in /etc/portage/package.keywords and emerging them.
If you want to contribute a self-made ebuild to Sunrise, you need to follow the commit guide. To provide a layer of security people need to receive a login to actually be able to commit, the next layer is the review. Some official Gentoo developers have a look at your commit before they go into the section people will download with layman.
Ebuilds that made their way into the Sunrise overlay have a comment about that fact in the corresponding bug. |
