Turbolinux Releases "Turbolinux 8 for AMD64", a Dedicated OS for AMD's Next-Generation 64-Bit Processors

First Linux OS for AMD64-based systems in Japan

April 23, 2003 - Tokyo, Japan - Turbolinux, Inc. today announced a new product, Turbolinux 8 for AMD64, a dedicated OS for the AMD OpteronTM processor. The AMD OpteronTM is a next generation 64-bit processor announced on April 22 (US) by Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). Turbolinux 8 for AMD64 will be the first Linux OS available in Japan dedicated to the AMD64 architecture.

Turbolinux provide the advantege of compatibility and the ability to run 32-bit applications without restriction at the OS level, thereby enabling a more streamlined migration from 32-bit environments. This enables users to eliminate the barriers imposed by 32-bit systems and to enjoy the benefits of the scalability of 64-bit computing while utilizing current 32-bit application assets in expanding computing environments.

In addition, Turbolinux is able to utilize their Asian language expertise cultivated in the development of existing x86-based operating systems to support 64-bit Japanese and Asian (simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, and Korean) language environments.

Turbolinux is the first company to offer the 64-bit Linux technology to Japan and Asia market. With joint marketing and sales activities with AMD, Turbolinux commits to engage Linux in 64 bit computing and its market.

"AMD welcomes the release of Turblolinux 8 for AMD64. With Turbolinux 8 for AMD64 technology, users establishing AMD Opteron TM processor-based systems in enterprise and research/educational institutions will be able to quickly bring in the reliability and scalability of Linux, as well as the superiority of 64-bit computing." said Sam Rogan, Director of Marketing, Computation Products Group AMD Asia Pacific . "AMD and Turbolinux will collaborate on market development, working towards the common goal of providing outstanding reliability, scalability, and cost merit for 64-bit Linux-based solutions."
