scim does not work?

Managed to install scim by converting TLES8.0 rpms in scim website to tgz and installed scim and scim-chinese.

In fluxbox I can call out the scim bar and enter pinyin. But once I select one of characters, nothing is displayed (tried in mlterm).

my LANG is zh_CN.GB2312 (tried GBK also not working)
LC_CTYPE is zh_CN.GB2312.
others are POSIX (based on another post here for fcitx).

my xinitrc has
export XMODIFIERS=@im=SCIM
scim -d

Anything is wrong? Under same setting fcitx can work.

Well, saw the post below and tried to change locale to en_US.UTF-8. mlterm's font sucks, but can work. Does scim only work under UTF-8?

Thanks. Tried again and it worked now with mlterm - need to turn on AA for mlterm (-A), otherwise blanks appear in mlterm.
