1. What is fcitx?

It stands for Free Chinese Input Toy of X, an input method for Linux.
To be more precise, fctix is a collection of Simplified Chinese input
methods based on XIM (X Input Method), including WuBi, PinYin, and
QuWei, and it is distributed under GPL.  It is the descendent of gWuBi.

2. About the author

The author of fcitx is Yuking.  You may redistribute this software
freely, provided you indicate the author in your redistribution --
please respect software developers as well as ourselves.

Yuking spent a lot of time on fctix to make a good input method for
Linux, and in order to help him, the people on LinuxSir.org are
maintatining this homepage.

Thanks also goes to YU Mingjian, james_su, Chukuang, tram and WineInput.
They did a lot to make Chinese input method for Linux possible.

3. How to get fcitx?

You can download fcitx from the following links.  If you are new to
Linux, the RPM package is suggested for an easy installation.

The most recent version of fctix is 1.8.4, this version includes the
following improvement:
1. A bug in PinYin input method is fixed.
2. Adjusted the word order in WuBi input method, corrected some errors
in its codelist as well.

4. Installation

Some basic things about installation:

1) Install as root:  If you are an ordinary user instead of root, please
use the following command to get the root privilege:

[beinan@linuxsir beinan]$ su
Password: (please type in your root password here)

All the following process assume the root privilege.

2) Delete the system default input method first:

On Red Hat, we can use the following command to remove:
[root@linuxsir beinan]# rpm -e miniChinput

On Mandrake, we can use:
[root@linuxsir beinan]# rpm -e Chinput

If you installed an old version of fcitx, please use the following
command to remove it (for RPM installation only)
[root@linuxsir beinan]# rpm -e fcitx

Installation from RPM package:

If you are a newbie, please try this way first.

Installation for most distributions, such as Red Hat, Turbo, and SuSE:

1) Download RPM packages of fcitx;

2) Put the downloaded file in a directory, say, /tmp.

3) Go to /tmp and begin installation:
[root@linuxsir beinan]# cd /tmp
[root@linuxsir tmp]# rpm -ivh fcitx-1.8.4-1.rpm

4) If you have installed an old version of fcitx before, please delete
the .gWuBi directory in your currect user's home:
[beinan@linuxsir beinan]$ rm -rf ~/.gWuBi

5) Restart X, that is, press Ctrl + Alt + Backspace.

Installation for Mandrake:

1) Download the RPM package for Mandrake.

2) Installation: go to the directory where the downloaded file is, then
# rpm -ivh fcitx*.rpm

3) If you have installed an old version of fcitx before, please delete
the .gWuBi directory in your currect user's home:
$ rm -rf ~/.gWuBi

4) Modify the file /etc/sysconfig/i18n, change it as the following:
LANGUAGE=zh_CN.GB2312:zh_CN:zh
LC_ADDRESS=zh_CN
LC_COLLATE=zh_CN
LC_NAME=zh_CN
XIM=fcitx
LC_NUMERIC=zh_CN
LC_TIME=zh_CN
LC_MEASUREMENT=zh_CN
LANG=zh_CN
LC_MESSAGES=zh_CN
LC_IDENTIFICATION=zh_CN
LC_CTYPE=zh_CN
LC_TELEPHONE=zh_CN
CONSOLE_NOT_LOCALIZED=yes
ENC=gb
LC_MONETARY=zh_CN
XIM_PROGRAM=fcitx
LC_PAPER=zh_CN
XMODIFIERS="@im=fcitx"

5) Restart X, that is, press Ctrl + Alt + Backspace.

Installation from source package:

1) Download the source package.

2) If we downloaded the source to /tmp directory, we should decompress
and install as follows (root privilege is needed):
# cd /tmp
# tar jxvf fcitx-1.8.4.tar.bz2
# cd fcitx-1.8.4
# make
# make install
If you know what XFT is, and you are currently using it, please use the
following command for installation (if you don't know about XFT, the
make and make install command above should be sufficient for you)
# make -f Makefile.xft

3) If you have installed an old version of fcitx before, please delete
the .gWuBi directory in your currect user's home:
$ rm -rf ~/.gWuBi

4) If you are using Mandrake distribution, you need to modify the file
/etc/sysconfig/i18n as follows:
LANGUAGE=zh_CN.GB2312:zh_CN:zh
LC_ADDRESS=zh_CN
LC_COLLATE=zh_CN
LC_NAME=zh_CN
XIM=fcitx
