It depends on distros. You may choose to download pre-compiled binary packages for RH or Debian, then you don't need to do any compilation.

However, if you download the xxxxxxxxx.bin file from nVidia, it is very likely you need to compile it.

Unfortunately, in either case, the current nVidia driver may not work with the very latest kernel such as 2.6.9+.
