Has anyone else tried Archlinux? a smart distribution, by the way, it is definitly convenient for the broadband users, as the DIY user, probaly you should try it, in Arch, simplified display and input are easy, you can take the steps shows as many posts.

applications of linux to scineces, it works really well than in microsoft windows. I do ELISA (dip strip ELISA) analysis by linux everyday.

try it to use linux in scientific applications, if someone gets trouble to install archlinux, I am glad to post the tips. trust me, it is easy.

最好还是用redhat，这些软件都是在 rh上编写和编译的，也是在rh上测试的，在rh上不会有什么问题，别的发型版就不好说了

假如我的主要目的是利用linux进行科学研究，有没有这样的linux呢？
具体的说，最好能包含：
1.上网(含ftp)，音频、视频播放；(寓教于乐！)
2.科学计算(有没有功能类似于matlab、maple、gauss等数学软件)
3.文本格式化系统(这个应该有了，tex)
桌面环境没必要象kde那样强大，也就是说，易用性一般即可，最关键的是速度！
英文版也可！

我就用过matlab和maple的linux版，操作和windows一样
至于tex，简直就是linux各个发行版的标配
